There is a lot on our minds in these times. The world is out of joint. Efforts towards disarmament, peace and reconciliation seem like yesterday‘s news. In this very personal recording, Julius Berger, violoncello, and Annette Schavan, recitation, connect music by Ernest Bloch with recitations from the Book of Psalms. People of the Jewish and Christian faiths have been reading the Book of Psalms for 3,000 years. It is a shared treasury of prayer and reflection about what defines our lives – Julius Berger explores the meaning of “psalmόs” – singing with string accompaniment. Also for Ernest Bloch, the Book of Psalms has been an important source of inspiration. In this recording, his works are in direct dialogue with selected excerpts of the Psalms. Julius Berger and Annette Schavan are accompanied by Andrei Pushkarev, vibraphone, and Pavel Beliaev, marimba. The recording, made in the church of Maria Regina Martyrum in Berlin, condenses into one big prayer.
